mermaids readers: meet benny, benny, meet mermaids…

let me introduce to you a special friend of mine~
benny the dog.
benny belongs to my pals cj and scott. they sadly just found out last week that benny has cancer, and only has about a month to live.
i felt truly honored when they asked me do a photo session with benny. to witness the love of their sweet little family for an afternoon was beautiful. it was bittersweet, of course, but their commitment to filling the remaining days of benny’s life with joy was inspiring. these are the moments that put things into perspective:
life is fragile.
and beautiful.
so love and be loved.
if any of you feel inspired to share any words of kindness or comfort, i am sure cj and scott would greatly appreciate it! i know many of you have experienced losing a beloved pet, and understand the importance of support during these tender times.
all right benny-
this one is for you buddy….
you are our mascot rockstar for the day!

Every day since McCabe has shared Benny’s story with me, I have wondered how he is fairing. I have seen many furry friends who look much like him, and during those moments, my heart, positive vibrations, and healing energy spins through time and space to him, and his loving family.
Witnessing our loved ones through pain is never easy-witnessing our furry friends through-proves an even bigger challenge, because the only way they can communicate is through their love, loyalty and daily routine.
Scott and CJ-by capturing Benny’s spirit through media, you will have a constant reminder not only of how well you love him, but by how much life he has given YOU!
I will continue to keep Benny in my thoughts, and sending those thoughts your way! I hope you can feel them.

These creatures are reminders of what love should always be. unconditional. connected. present. faithful. pure. unadulterated. loyal. They may not get to stay as long as we/they would like and when they leave we are forever altered, but so much the better than before they came into our lives to watch over us.

Thank you everyone for caring about our special boy, and of course Mac for not only making the video but being our and Benny’s friend. He has his good days and yesterday wasn’t such a good day. He isn’t in pain from what we can gather and is absolutely loving the fact that he is being treated like the king that he is! Keep him in your hearts and smile, he makes me smile every moment I have with him!

Hi Mcabe
I’ve only recently discovered your blog and I have to say, you are a great inspiration to me.
Here in the UK, the children break up for summer on Friday and I would love to do some form of art journal with my daughter and her best friend. I hope you don’t mind me asking but have you any tips please? I have lots of ideas in my head but not too sure where to start.
((hugs))

This was so beautiful. Benny is a love I can tell from the video, and from the sweet way he let you put a rock on his precious little head.
Our animals give us so much, and stay with us so short a time. I guess they feel they only need to stay a few years since every day with them is filled with so much love and acceptance and giggling.
What a lovely way to remember him. I hope his last days are filled with walks and kisses and treats and peace.

My story is infinite…four words, totally true, totally right on. Guys, Benny won’t be leaving you, I promise, he’s irrevocably touched your lives with his pawprints to the point where he couldn’t. The love you share is too thick, too full, too powerful. Hang on to the memories and the moments of joy and beauty. Benny will.

PS – Mccabe….as always, your magic surrounds the world and those of us blessed enough to be in it. I wish you lived closer. I could use your light now and again! Besos baby!

our hearts go out to you…. we just lost our beloved dog scarlet & not a day goes by that one or all of us does not have a scarlet moment… she was the most amazing, brave,& beautiful dog…. she had a chronic kidney condition & we did everything humanly possible for her… her last days with us were so precious & it looks like benny is having the same experiences…. we were camping, horseriding, surfing, she even went to a few parties with great music & was dancing it up…. one thing that was so helpful to me & my children was reading this children’s book, “the tenth good thing about barney” by judith viorst…. it’s about a cat named barney who dies… anyway, we made a list of ten good things about scarlet- there were a few more than 10- but anyway…. it was so wonderful & as she was fading away, my oldest son & i, just read our letter & told her how much we loved her… it was so comforting & peaceful somehow…. enjoy every moment & know that there are a world of people & some great dogs that are thinking of you all… xoxo garnette, colby, emerson, & wynn

What a beautiful way to capture the essence of Benny. My heart goes out to both of you and your other dog. The pets left behind grieve too. It doesn’t matter how long we have our furry friends, it’s just never long enough. Please know that Benny will always be with you and you will still feel his unconditional love via his beautiful spirit. I know my Maggie girl will be waiting for him as he crosses the Rainbow Bridge ~ she will welcome him into the space of LOVE there.

Through an aching heart, I hear the words, They never truly leave us.
As you and Benny say farewell to one another, give yourselves the time to grieve on both sides of his life. You will miss him, deeply, as will your other dog. So allow one another to be sad, but be sure to fill the void with lots of hugs and love.
Hugs from another animal lover.

just watched Dogs 101 on Animal Planet, boxers have highest cancer rate among dogs. Its almost a given if you get a boxer this beautiful creature will get cancer. My heart aches.
