first mermaid camp of the summer…

sarah_camp7

my good girlfriend sarah hosted a camp for me in her lovely home a few weeks ago. i wanted to share some photos..and also wanted to check in with my mermaid warrior students and their camps. if you have photos on your blogs, please link! i want to see!

here are the journals we made out of kids board books. the spray paint was a huge hit with the stencils. (so much to the point where i worried if some kids were going home high. we will wear masks next camp) they also had a great time with medium mixed with glass beads (which we blended with acrylics-so cool!)

the I AM BRAVE pages:

sarah_camp1

“joy.”

sarah_camp2

“i am brave because i am alwase (always) with macabe.”

sarah_camp3

sarah_camp4

“i am brave because i am funny. i am brave because i am me.”

sarah_camp5

“i am brave because i can do anything.”

i will tell you what i told the mini mermaids at camp. (you already know this of course, i do realize this, but it is the kind of thing we need to hear again and again…)

do not let the dream-stealers get you down. your dreams remind them of their own lost dreams that may not have worked out as planned. your joy may trigger their bitterness. watch out for these types, but by all means keep making art. keep making joy.

sarah_camp6

no matter how many times it has been done before, no one can do exactly what you do the way you do it. no one can ever be you.

sarah_camp8

do art because it feels good. do art because you get to make up your own rules. do art to help heal others.

sarah_camp9

getting messy while creating is the fun part, and no, you can not wash your hands yet. finish what you are doing and then wash your hands. the paint that stills sticks to your fingers will wash off in the tub tonight. artists have pretty hands.

sarah_camp11

enjoy the process. don’t judge the art until you are finished….and when you are finished, don’t judge it then either. judgements are for cranky pants who have nothing better to do. not every piece of artwork you do needs to go on the fridge. make art for YOU. not the world.

sarah_camp12

lets try to replace the word “copied” with “inspired.”

sarah_camp15

art=love

sarah_camp16

your words matter. your art matters. you matter.

sarah_camp18

art will be your friend when no one else understands. art will listen and be gentle with your heart. art has a crush on you.

sarah_camp19

art, as my wise student and friend tess says, “tells your own story in way that other people can understand.”

sarah_camp20

most importantly, art loves you for you. unconditionally. art will wait for you no matter how much time passes.

art believes in you.

and so do i…
(and the mermaids!)

Sigh…dreamy…sigh…wise…sigh…love…

As much as I love the rest of the post, I keep laughing about the kids with the spray paint. Oh my! I’m sure they’re OK though or I wouldn’t be laughing.

How Fun is that ~ Love those happy faces!

I just wrote about our experience today. We are all loving it :)

Love it! I’m so glad to have found your blog, we would have lovely art making play dates together : )

The dream stealers paragraph and the one right after were so good to read. Whilst I know no one can do as I do, it has frustrated me in recent months when I feel as though people are a little too attached to me (can I say that here as a comment? i feel odd. it wouldn’t even go on my own blog) (and now i worry what it says about me) but anyway. Seeing what i’ve been telling myself in black and white here means the world to me today. maybe it means the shift is on the horizon… & gosh! you are inspiring me to make art when i’ve little space to move. i do however have my little camera with it’s movie function…
& i love that little polka dot rock! so cute.
wishing you well as always…

I want to take the time to say thank you and that this site and what you are doing is inspirational. I am going to school to be an Art Therapist and this is exactly what Art is. I truely love it and keep it up. You are helping so many young girls and boys. Keep up their confidence in themselves because I think thats what children need these days. And I have to say this post is my favorite so far. Good Luck and Keep Going!
