mermaid alters

mermaidalters

we have been making mermaid alters all week at the art cottage, very fun! i like the idea of an “alter” in the non-religious sense. in my old house, i had a alter set up on my room that i would alternate candles, written notes, louise hay affirmation cards, shells, and whatever else made me feel good. i did not meditate there very often, although i would love to say that i am one of those people who can. (practice!) but it did comfort me to just look at it~to be reminded of my source and all that is true in the world i want to live in.

while i love the cottage i live in now, it is not spacious enough to withstand an alter space, however…i do make tiny nooks through out the house with alter-like treasures. i still rotate things often because i think it is keeps things fresh and flowing.

i made a few for my etsy shop. they come wrapped all pretty and smelling nice. a nurturing gift for you or a pal.

i am curious about others alter spaces. (or however you think of them) do you have one? what does it look like?

In the past, I’ve had little rock piles scattered throughout my home, like the mounds pilgrims would make if they were gnomes :)

My current altar is in my yoga room. It used to be my meditation altar, but like you, it now stands as a reminder to be present in my life until the time when I can sit again. On it I have some shells from my favorite Cape Cod Beach; a heart shaped rock from Martha’s Vineyard; a hawk’s feather found when I was on yoga retreat at Kripalu (magical month in my life); a statue of Ganesha (remover of obstacles); Shiva statue (my life is all about that dance of destruction and transformation); a favorite photo of my last dog, Bandit, who inspired me to learn patience and to know each moment contains the potential for joy (i mean, every time he saw his squeaky toy, it was new again and full of squeak and play.) Oh, and a candle waiting for the day I sit down again – to remember my own inner light. I love the idea of mini altars … is that coming up on our last mermaid assignment? :)

kasten and monique make beautiful altars…….
now, i am inspired to make one of my own!
thanks mccabe.

Love the alters. I have several in my house. One on top of a file cabinet and another on top of a bookcase. Mine will have candles rocks shells figurines and quotes.

I love the teal, my fave color. I am all about candles and ones I have made more so. In my window sill by my computer I alternate candles and the pictures in my favorite wooden frame, rocks and sand. I mostly like pictures of when I was a little girl or when my son was a baby. Reminds me of my most happiest life experiences.

Beautiful, gorgeous creations Mermie!:-) I love the idea of altars. I’ve noticed that you have little nooks of such interesting items in pics of your seaside cottage and I’ve always thought how wonderful and peaceful it must feel. Oh, and I always notice the candles & flowers. I have a few special nooks but I honestly haven’t paid much attention lately ~ thanks for the reminder! I have a beautiful box that was my mother’s, small candles, prayer beads, photos, quotes, affirmation cards, Buddha, angels, Mermaid rocks, etc. I am creating a space now for my pics when I was very young. Thanks so much for sharing your lovely work and reminding us all of what we can do to create more beauty around us.
Love you!

So cool. I have been playing with the idea of an altar and creating my own meditation/yoga/writing room. (The blessing of an older house with lots of little cozy rooms!) I am reading a wonderfully inspiring book, Marry Your Muse by Jan Phillips and her description of her sacred space really inspired me to finally put one of my someday wishes into action.
First I need to move my daughter into a new room — and then I can claim my space.
My vision includes crystals, special momentos, pictures of ancestors, nature objects and always fresh flowers. I love the idea of incorporating some art pieces, too.

Thanks for the inspiration!!

P.S. I finally got your blog on my RSS feed — I’ve been lurking but have missed saying hello!! I always appreciate your art, your honesty and your heart.

i love your mermaid altars!

i think of my whole home as an altar. the colours and art and furniture and things all mean something to me. i always love looking at photos of your cottage because it does feel like the whole thing is an altar too.

actually now i feel inspired to go tidy up around here and re-arrange things, freshen up. thanks!

come see my mermaid dollie i made~!
LOVE.

p.s. i am LOVIN your class!

hi, mccabe.

the altars and mermaids are great. thanks for sharing, thanks for the inspiration!

if you can find it, check the book “altars and icons”. it’s a photo book of altars of all sizes in people’s homes. more inspiration!

hope all is well.

kathy

just finshed up a li art session with the kiddos…have molding paste from head to toe, and the little one glued confetti to her foot. *sigh* good times

oooh another good idea!
I think I make “spontaneous” altars….not altars in the truest sense of the word, but little spots around the house with say flowers and a sentimental object, or photos with candles, etc. When I look at them, I sometimes realize they really are altars to the things I care about or that inspire me.

I see blossoming in your work Dancing Mermaid. The creator is creating through you! I encourage you to keep letting it flow. Your work is an insiration to all.

I love you altars very inspiring.
I have a sacred shine which is in the main area of my altar. Its a small coffee table with candles, an offering bowl and crystals, necklaceses and my cards. Its a place to pray, do creative work by and just meditate.
My sacred shine is dedicated to past loved ones, fey, mermaids and Bast. ^^
