art camp pics*

just finished my 3rd art camp today. we had such a great week hanging out at the cottage making art journals. these girls were a little older and the class was smaller-so we really got to explore with detail and different techniques.

these bracelets were fun to make. they are wood (got them at michaels-they even have kids sizes) and we started off painting them one color. then they cut up scrapbook-type paper and glued it on. the little word plates were a cool touch (got them at ah-hem…walmart) and the kids were really into it. other things to add-sequence, glitter, cut-outs, letters, etc.

we also made our own collage paper. they wrote on watercolor paper with a black sharpie and then painted over it with white gesso. then they added a watered down acrylic wash (once the gesso was dry) in different colors.

we cut up the collage paper and made them into fish. i joked that the fish could symbolize “swimming through your problems.” hey i can’t bring some profound meaning to everything. the kids thought it was funny and used it in their journals anyway.

mcamp13.gif

i thought they turned out pretty darn cool.

love how the more powerful, positive feelings are taking charge here.
mcamp16.gif

for the backgrounds we started off with stamps, and then did a wash over it with (again) acrylic paint watered down. its a really easy way to do a cool background.

sewing was a huge hit. sew in your journals folks! i have also been sewing things directly onto canvas, fun fun.

below page reads: i am brave. page was done as a affirmation from a girl who was having trouble speaking up. isn’t the dragon a clever touch?

i can’t believe delilah hung out with the girlies as much as she did. (they adored her) look at her all zen-ed out in the middle of us. it makes my heart swell with love.
mcamp20.gif

daily flying lessons. yep, everyday after lunch.
mcamp23.gif

this project was named (by the kids) MISSION SPREAD THE LOVE. we left a bucket of hearts for strangers to find on the sidewalk outside my house. while we were making them this dude next door starting yelling at god-knows-what and one of the girls said so sweetly, “he needs a whole lotta heart rocks.”
mcamp251.gif

“take a rock, spread the love, and pass it on!” they are almost half gone by now. we get a lot of traffic during the summer months, and can hear people talk about them when our windows are open.

dance because you can.

I love your fish project. My good friend had this saying. “Life’s a funny fish, you might as well swim.” Natasha C.

And as for kids, they have problems, real ones, even though they might seem trivial to us sometimes. They need coping strategies to get through them, so they are ready for the big ones, later. And you know, sometimes their problems are big ones in any book. I love teenagers.

i love your art camp – still wish i could figure out how to get my girl to your camp…but one week isn’t nearly enough time to do it all.

flying lessons…they are my favorite kind of travel.

you totally rock.
what you are doing with these angel girls
is so very sacred.

You are so inspiring!
I love seeing Delilah in the middle of it all, right where she’s supposed to be!

I wish I could come to your art camp! You inspire me to live more creatively. I especially love the bracelets. Thanks for sharing.

you amaze me. you are one of the most inspirational and loving people i have ever seen. goodness just radiates from you. look at what you’re doing! you’re starting a rockin’ revolution.

i’ve been doing a little art journaling, i’m too scared to get crazy, but i’ll get there. i took pics for a SPC recently, i’m too lazy to go get the direct link.

heartpaintedrock . . .

You have inspired me so very much. I feel like a kid at your mermaid camp.

You rawk!

Love the “swimming through your problems” idea … I teach reiki to kids and our program infuses yoga, kirtan, tapping, meditation and a ton of art – experiential activities to support the kids’ learning how to recognize their own feelings, own their own feelings and then let their own feelings GO! when they are no longer served by them. I am going to use Art Journaling AND Rock Painting (and giving them away!)in our fall class …they resonate so beautifully with your campers … and I’ve seen the way my Nell and her friends have taken to them, too! Makes me wonder if you have any interest in teaching a reiki class to children?!

[...] More from this mermaid… I love these bracelets.  Why not make some for yourself or with your little girl? [...]

Hey, you know you make me want to have a kid just so I could send him or her to your camp?!?! It’s true…
I heart your heart…

I am interested in what kind of paint do you use? I am thinking of doing this around my college campus but it rains alot so I was wondering what kind of paint i should use on the rocks I leave around for others to find. If you have any recommendations please let me know! Thanks
