lets get crafty people

frames.jpg

hello all-

and welcome to a day at mermaid camp.
even if it is not day anymore where you are.

(i was hanging out with rockstars last night
and am a little late today. oopsies.)

the far right “fairy white” photo is by the amazing thea
for all who are drooling by the way.
it is even prettier in person and she has one left.

*********

okay, now before we even began,
lets get one thing straight:

there is no such thing as
“not being creative.”

maybe you have not done art in awhile.
maybe you can’t draw a dog.
(i can’t)
maybe you don’t have time.
maybe there are more important things to do.

these things do not matter.
you were born creative.

remember the feeling you got
when you received a new box of crayons
when you were little?

remember the feeling of a new drawing pad,
white and bare, ready for your creation?

remember when the thought of a drawing being
“not good enough” never entered your mind because
you were too excited to play with your new smelly markers?

this is the spirit of your inner child-
the one that wants gold chunky glitter for no reason
and those little white rhinestones you were eyeing at
the craft store.

here at mermaid camp there are:

no rules
no grades.
no pressure.
no comparing-
i am not going to make you hold
it up in front of the class unless you want me to.

take a big, happy, deep breath and repeat after me,

“I AM AN ARTIST.”

i am an artist.

how does that feel?
does it make you excited?
nervous?
angry?

try to notice your feeling
without judging it.

if a cranky little voice speaks up
and says,
“you are not an artist because_______”

gently observe
and know that if you continue this path of creativity,
of rediscovering your truest, most authentic self,
that this voice is eventually going to get tired
and go somewhere else.

now we can play.

lets talk about framing your art. it could be a photograph, a small collage, a postcard, a note from your best friend in the 4th grade-anything that means something to you. by framing it we are giving your art power-saying YES of course it is good enough for a frame.

if you don’t have anything you want to frame, that is okay. you can start with a frame, and perhaps the piece of art that is supposed to go there is going to show up one day. or maybe you will be inspired later to put something in there.

or not.

it does not matter. this is just a little project to get those juices flowing.

frame idea# 1-a mermaid frame.
this is what you need:

a wood frame. (size of your choice)
mod podge in glossy lustre
shells of small and medium size
beach glass
tiny white seed beads
fine white glitter
aqua acylic paint, any brand
(my favorite is LIQUITEX in bright aqua green)
small sponge brush

(you can get all of these items at michaels crafts.)
remove glass from frame.
paint the frame aqua with your sponge brush.
the more layers you do, the darker it will be obviously.
most of this is going to be covered anyways so
it does not matter so much.

blue_frame.jpg

allow to dry, and then do the same thing on the back.

(i like to do crafty stuff on tin foil because it does not stick
and is easy clean up.)
step 2:
coat a small section of your frame with mod podge-
put it on pretty thick as it will dry clear.

blue_frame2.jpg

gently place your shells and sea glass on the glue.
in the tiny spaces that remain in between the shells&glass-
drop in your seed beads and then coat generously with glitter.

you can never have too much glitter by the way.

frame41.jpg

there ya go-
you have a mermaid frame.

you can also do this with mirrors and boxes.

feel free to mix it up
with letter beads, different colored paint-make it yours.
you can’t do it wrong or ugly.

frame idea #2

you will need:
wood frame
acrylic paint color of your choice
mod podge glossy lustre
letter-cut outs
seed beads (optional)
glitter (optional)
sponge brush
small paintbrush

for these two frames i painted them with the sponge brush. the purple one was painted with liquitex heavy body deep violet and liquitex heavy body light portrait pink (great base for skin color) and the green one was used with liquitex heavy body cadmium yellow and liquitex heavy body vivid lime green. the green one was diluted with water to allow the wood texture to come through. the purple one has two coats of paint.

frame1.jpg

with the mod podge and paintbrush,
i painted the letters directly onto the frame.

make sure you paint both sides of the letter
front and back.

remember, mod podge is not only a glue
but a finish too.

i painted the whole frame with it once
i was done.

the letters are from K&company
and called letters to go.

you get 5000 letters in various sizes and shapes-
they are worth the cash and something you can
use in many art projects.

they also look great in paintings and on canvas.

don’t feel you have to follow my directions
word for word.

some of you may feel more comfortable
doing that and some of you
may get sparked to do it your own way.

it really does not matter as long as you
are being creative and enjoying yourself.

i have both the colored frames listed in my etsy shop.

also i have available 2 kits for the mermaid frame,
which have everything you need to make one-
geared towards peeps who have limited time, this
saves you a trip to the art store.

they are not listed in my esty shop
but email me if interested.

speaking of etsy-

to all you who are playing with idea
of starting your own shop,
this excersie is a good way to allow you to
think outside of the box.

i hear a lot,
“but there are so many photographers and it is hard to sell prints.”

yes there are and yes it can be,
however, no one is going to do it exactly like you.

framing your own work in a clever way
is something you can do to make your art stand out,
as well as spark ideas to make your product uniquely yours.

hope this makes you want to do something crafty.

even if you are not ready to jump on in,
simply opening your heart to creativity is an act
of love too.

this is all about small steps.

my next project for mermaid camp will be posted
on monday.

stay tuned
and please link if this inspires you to make something.

you are so talented and beautiful~thank you for these great ideas! the kiddos and i are going to be making some cool frames with your faboo instructions :)

okay, this is totally unrelated. well, kind of. actually, not really. it just has nothing to do with art.

“rediscovering your truest, most authentic self.”

this line stuck right out to me at the beginning because i’m finishing my last month and a half of a master’s business program right now, and my final thesis is to create a complete business plan for an original idea. my idea is — totally contrary to cold corporate meanies — to create a kit that helps women band together in their quest to discovering their “truest, most authentic self.”

i have been working tirelessly on this plan for the past month with my fair share of gremlins. tomorrow, my first draft of complete financials are due. i have been working nonstop for about 6 hours tonight, after a long nonstop day that began at 7am already.

i.am.tired.

but seeing these words here, from you, the lovely creative mermaid . . . well, it reminded me that i’m on the right path and that what i’m creating is GOOD.

thank you for always fighting for our hearts. i love that so much. it lifts me up when my head is feeling cast down these days.

Oh this camp is just the coolest idea ever! Seriously. I love it! I’m super excited.

Love,
Jen

Here i am at freakin’ 7am, sleepy as one can be, sipping coffee and stumbling on this yummy blog post.

Now i can’t wait to get started on some frames! (and for the shops to open to get some tin foil. great idea!)

btw…the bowl with flowers in the second photo. I have some very similar ones!

I am so happy to be at Mermaid Camp! I blogged yesterday about feeling creative (and being picked out of the hat - sorry, bowl) and now I am feeling even more inspired.
Have I said how much I love this blog???

LOVE IT!

I am so making that mermaid frame! Thank you!
I heart you hard core.
And I want you to know…every time Ben comes across that chimp you gave him he gives it a big hug. :)

i totally feel a trip to the craft store coming on!yay!

Yahoo I’m a Mermaid Camper! This one time at Mermaid Camp…..hahaha. I think I’m making a Michael’s trip on my lunch break today, for shizzle.

You are truly MAGIC! I need to run but I had to stop in and see if the Mermaid Camp was open. :-) You always inspire me…and I love you.

Merm, You’re such the creativity fairy!! In a lovely and magical kind of way ~ of course. :) I adore what you do here! XO

So I finally got the courage to start an Etsy store. I’m not selling anything quite yet. It is still a work in progress. Honestly though, it was difficult (mentally) just to initiate the whole process. I’m kind of scared and anxious about it all, so I truly appreciate your encouragement! I know I can do it….I’m an artist damn it!

Thank you for believing.

i have an essay to finish this weekend (my last for this degree!) but i will remember to come back to this when the books are back in boxes. iother crafty things. thank you for sharing your talents!

You make me feel soo soo loved! I loved how Christianne says: thank you for always fighting for our hearts. That is truly what you do! I think that is the biggest wildest rockin compliment you can get!

I also want to say…thank you for fighting for our hearts! xx

I need to make a butterfly frame for a friend, help me lady, help me!!!

Hey there - I gave some rocks to my friend here today, who is recovering from a stroke she had about 6 weeks ago and needs some magic to push through all the dark spots…. She loved them and put them next to her bed. I hope from there, they will pass on some of your Southern Californian magic :)

I can’t wait to see more of your creations on etsy soon, and I love the camp idea.

Love, Sarah

ahhhh the universe is so perfect. This am I sat down and said-I am ging to checkin on my blog sisters today. I am just going to sit and check in-without letting my absence shame me away.

Then I click and here is this amazing camp post. I can’t believe I was gifted with this fabulous gift. Thank you darling for posting this.

I was thrilled beyond measure to see fairy white-gave me a teeny love hug-and then by the end of the post I was excited to try these projects. I have long been thinking about trying to incorporate the meanings or poems that go with many of my photos with them in some way.

I just love how your creative brilliance inspires me so…..

You rock mermaid.

I just love and adore you.

XOXOXOXO

i LUFF this. thank you for continually inspiring me to reach inside and not be afraid.

i’ve been so afraid of myself that i had never even contemplated going to squam… because y’know, it’s for ARTISTS. guess who’s going to squam now? hehe. ME. the artist.

thank you always.
pink, puffy hearting you.

I had wondered how you did this! I had not heard of Mod Podge, but after a little help from Google, I have discovered an online supplier here in New Zealand! I had been using glue and then varnish, so this sounds like a great idea!
thank you!
