how to make a creativity kit and other stuff

fairy_kit.jpg

hi friends*

i made this little fairy kit today (cause you know i am all about suzi blu and her fairy jars) for some special little friends of mine who just lost someone dear to them. its hard to know what to do when people you care about are grieving. i am so far away from my little fairy girls, so i thought: what would i do if i were with them right now?

thats easy. i would teach them how to make a fairy jar.
so here is my long distance fairy kit with all the fixings. i love the gift of creativity.
*
i added notes in some of the bags:

hagan or lacie or emerson if you are reading this get off the
computer now. i mean it.

they don’t have to take every suggestion of course-
(but if they don’t i will take it back-jk.)
i think it makes it more personal this way.
*
besides, i can’t really not leave little notes. its my thing.
*
is there anyone you can inspire? it does not have to be elaborate as this one. (i am a craft nerd and tend to have an abundance of glittery stuff hanging around) remember simplicity is beautiful. so is thoughtfulness.

ideal recipients of a creativity package:

*a beginning artist who may be shy about going to an art store just yet.
* a friend who is trying to get back in touch with their creative side
* someone who you believe strongly in. (and make sure you stick in a note to tell them)
* a friend who is going through a transition of some sort
* a cranky person. they are cranky because they are not creating!

while we are talking about being creative, i wanted to put out there that i am more than happy to do custom orders. i enjoy doing them. some of the coolest packages i have put together have been someone else’s special request.

like christine asked me to make herb markers for her garden. isn’t that a great idea? i would have never thought of that.

another woman bought this print for a friend who is graduating, which i thought was pretty clever.

got some old jeans?

here is a pair of mother and daughter jeans i recently painted.

the child’s pair is supposed to be a princess theme. hence, the hot pink crown. because we all need a hot pink crown deep down don’t we?

more inspiration-wrap something pretty. break out the hot glue gun
if you are feeling feisty. at the knot of the bow glue shells, beads,
a starfish. tie in lavender from your garden.

the photo above is an embrace your inner mermaid kit. there are still two mermaids left. i even added an ocean card (which is a removable 4×6 photo) and one of karins amazing pink grapefruit candles. i am not kidding-these are the most scrumptious candles you will ever smell. trust me on this one.
*
alright dear readers-today i encourage you to think outside of the box. make something-anything. art does not have to be fancy or perfect. just play. invite a friend over to play. it feels good and it has no calories or msg.
*
plus it takes away cranky feelings.
*
hey-too bad delilah can’t paint.
well,yet.

O sweetie this just made my day and i haven’t even been up for an hour.

I was going to buy art supplies today. you know, canvas, paint. but now i’m gonna stop by the toys store and get me some glittery stuff and stickers and think of someone i can make a kit for.

Honey you are marvelous for doing this, you know that right?!

love you
xo

I couldn’t sleep so I got up to check to see if there were any answers out there – I’ve been cranky!!! And this post was my answer. I need to create something today. I need to get back into the flow, crack open my glitter and make something inspiring for someone – and I know just who it will be. Thank you for the nudge. I really needed it!!!

hi dancingmermie

I love this idea, and think that the fairy jar kit is a wonderfull idea!!

I would even like one for myself :-)

Thanks for the inspiration!

you are so freaking inspiring, I swear. If I lived in cali, you wouldn’t be able to pry me out of your yard. I would just lay in the grass and soak up all the inspiration-and whatever delia threw at me :-)

I’m agreeing with Brandi. I read your blog in the morning and feel creative all day! Thankfully it’s summer and I have time to spend doing it instead of having my nose in college books!

OMG! I want to come and live with you ~ seriously. :-) This is absolutely one of the best ideas! I have a dear friend that is going through a huge transition right now and she wants more “fun”. A kit like this sounds perfect!
love you,

Hi McCabe!

Of course as soon as I saw this incredible fairy kit, I thought of my Emily!

May I order a kit, just as nerdy and creative, as the one you pictured? She will LOVE it so much and with summer vacation starting soon it will keep her busy creating her magic…

Let me know!

Missing you~ We need to catch up soon.

xoxo

Such a great idea! Your a clever one McCabe. Thanks for featuring my candles too. That wrapping paper looks familiar too? Have a great week, hope to see you at the Summer Artists Market. Feel free to invite all your favorite people, it’s going to be a blast! Karin

you rock. i can’t say it enough. you inspire me daily. i have my love rocks in my bathroom so that i can see them every day and be reminded to do something more magical for myself.

so the thought hit me today, “self, you used to be a visual arts major… why aren’t you creating?”

to which ornery jenica replied, “well, because you’re not really an artist!”

to which happy jenica replied, “why aren’t you an artist? what makes you *not an artist*?”

to which ornery jenica had no answer.

i am an artist.

Such a joy to feel your energy coming off the screen, knowing what a journey you’ve had so far, and what awesomeness lies ahead. Long live creativity, and the urge to express it never dying, no matter what we might throw on top of it to squealch it out.

thank you for reminding me to be creative.

sometimes I get caught up in the dreaded “should bes” even in regards to creativity… like I “should be” writing my novel, and I forget that creativity is not about limiting your world to a pinprick, but about opening up to the possibilities, so we can choose, yes, CHOOSE happiness.

I think I would like to build a fairy house with my kids. Or paint some stones. Or make a mess with mud.

hi mcmermie . . . i can’t help but echo everyone here and say how amazing and life-giving and talented and wonderful you are. your joy in doing this — and your joy in passing it on — seeps through the computer screen and grabs my heart. it’s infectious! i love seeing how alive you are in these places.

i have some other thoughts for you, inspired by this post, but will send them to you privately. love to you, sweet girl!

so, so magical. i love the idea of these kits. i get very cranky when not creating so that line made me laugh out loud. love you and your fairie ways…

xoxo

love it all!

we went to a fair on saturday and bought some scented oils. we came home and made some great scented sachets for the house. love crafty times!

storm

Its a really funny little bit of synchronicity about your kit if you pop over to my blog and see what I’ve got!

You are so right! I love the feeling I get when I can be creative!
