what i wear: spc

this is my first time partaking in the self portrait challenge. i really liked this months topic: what i wear, so i thought now was as good a time as any to jump right in.
what i wear: dresses with jeans, bright red ballet flats, gold ballet flats, tall boots with over the knee socks (stripes preferred) lots and lots of bangles, scarves around my head, my neck, or my waist, glitter, cropped sweaters with long tees underneath, (layering is an art form) funky hats, cowgirl boots, jeans with everything, headbands, empire waist dresses, black mary janes with wool tights, and whatever else i can pull out of my closet that would pass as magical.
i try to dress how i feel everyday. i can totally relate to how denise says she dresses to create joy in her life. yes! when i put on my chocolate colored cowgirl boots with the silver studs and pig-tails, (or as one of my favorite little people renamed them “puney-tails” because they are so small) i hardly feel like i can get away with having a crappy attitude. however, there are those days when i simply feel as though i cannot snap out of it, and on those days i give myself permission to wear something plain and comfy. my tee-shirt and jeans day. my all black days. if i find myself wearing these outfits too many days in a row, i see it as a signal that something in my life needs to shift. time to bring the joy back.
i read somewhere that capricorns grow up backwards. this is me to a tee. somewhat of a shy, serious kid, i often hid my silly side in fear that no one would like “the real me.” this went on for years. the very last thing i wanted was to be the center of attention, let alone stick out because of something weird i was wearing.
i am making up for that childhood repression in my adult life. perhaps that is why i dress very young. i feel very young. a pink plaid jumper feels more me than a pair of slacks and a silk blouse. (not that there is anything wrong with that second combo) i have noticed that kids clothes often appear much more fun and lively than adult ones. wear did the joy go? why can’t i wear jeans with tiny rhinestones on the trim. oh yeah, i can. (and i do.)
i started painting kids jeans about a year ago for these craft shows i was in. they are soooo much fun to create, and my main inspiration is magic and joy~wearable art. (these too will be in my etsy shop, when my ultra busy boyfriend finishes my banner)

they say that love and beauty is on the inside, and i whole-heartily agree.
but that does not mean you cannot wear it on the outside.

ooooh. i would love an (adult-sized) pair if you could swing one. lovely!
i’ve been thinking about you so much lately…i have to hopefully finish 3 projects today and then i can finally write you that email i’ve been brewing…
this is just so delectable. for a long time i was afraid to indulge my passion for fashion, thinking it shallow, but it IS (or can be) such an expression of soul, can’t it?
you look adorable. and i know what you mean about feeling young. i’m constantly pegged at aboput 4 years old…yet another thing we have in common.
love to you, sweetpea. (feel it?)

Drools and begs & pleads for a pair of grown up jeans painted with bright, shiny, glittery dragonflies all over them.
You’re SO right mccabe, kids have ALL the fun (IF you let them). I’m a hot pink and black and glitter chick. AND I HEART boots (any boots!). I’m a bit of a gypsy, so I like twirly, bright, eccentric stuff. Vintage stores and thrift stores are magical to me!!
PS – Your pink hat is ADORABLE!!

you’ve got great style, i always love to see what you’ve got on when you’re in the photo. you should definitely put painted jeans in your etsy store, they are swoon-able.

Amen – I’m all about the inner beauty but I think we should have as much fun as possible with the outer!

I’ve been here before (sent by Boho!) but I can’t remember if I have ever commented – just lurked. (Today I was sent by Schmoopy!!)
I was feeling very very stuck today – quite tight and wound up – and when I read your post I started to cry. You describing your clothes – but more importantly the MAGIC – filled me with wonder and the realization that while on the inside I believe deeply in beauty and magic, my OUTSIDE would be more correctly described as ORDINARY. I’m not sure why I have never really got that before, but your words cleared my vision today. I have been holding back from showing ME to anyone.
I’m going to struggle with this – with years of hiding – but your post has kicked my ass a little, and I am deeply grateful!! Thank you!

oh my…could you be any more adorable?

Dude – I love that effing outfit SO MUCH. You are the coolest ever. Okay, maybe not ever, but top ten. Bob Dylan is a little cooler, but he’s going to die in the next several years – so you’re next in line. I’m not praying for Dylan to die or anything… but you get my drift.
I can’t wait for tomorrow.

Mccabe…you just ”mentioned” the word magic….and it appeared all over!!! Everywhere!!! Hope your feeling it too?!

I am another Capricorn gal, growing up backwards, but slower to evolve in the fashion quadrant.
I’ve had moments of fun fashion flings, and I yearn for those red suede boots with bangles and fur, I saw last fall in the shop window but….
shit! when did I becoe so stuffy?

Your sense of style, the clothes you wear, perfectly captures the magic you live.
And what I loved most about this, was how you make space for different moods and letting your appearance be a mirror, to reflect and sometimes to guide.
