role reversal

her: you are still reading that book?
me: yeah, i have been slow….i used to read a book a week, and write in my journal everyday…
her: but look at how much you have already read, not how much you have left.
me: i know i know, but i used to read so much fast-
her: excuse me for interrupting, but i am noticing that you are not being very positive right now. is there something you would like to talk about?
me: i don’t like my hair today. and i don’t do enough.
her: you do a lot, and you have nice hair, and maybe when you are ready you can choose another feeling. it is still ok to feel what you feel, but you don’t have to feel that way if you don’t want to.
me: ummm, yeah. i don’t like feeling like this.
her: then you can try to choose another feeling. do you think you can try that?
me: uh-huh.
her: i am so proud of you. now can i go watch hannah montana?

Of course the first comment that comes to mind is, “you get the best of both worlds…”
All kidding aside, there is so much wisdom that comes from our small companions, it’s a blessing to have children for friends. I feel bad for the adults that don’t recognize the wise beauty of little ones, truly their loss.
My 6 year old often stops me in my tracks with her wise words (and fresh tongue too!)
Zack, Cody and Hannah are popular names in my house.

I worried today about not reading as much as i used to. And wondering about that fact hasn’t made me read any faster and certainly didn’t make me feel better. I’m gonna go with this advise, thanks for sharing! xoxo

I don’t have anyone quite like that in my real life herer in the badlands, but I carry a little virtual version in my head and she does the trick most of the time.
I bet your hair looked beautiful. x

I can totally understand how you feel, evern when those around you see the positive it’s hard for us too, it’s our nature…but see how wise we once were
we can be that way again =)

I love how kids can just see through the BS and know what is going on, and have such profound and simple wisdom to share. What a beautiful soul she is!

Brilliant…and when the ‘her’s talk like that…don’t you just want to fall down to the ground and play dead? Are we not suppose to be sooo clever! Put a smile on my face…when your ready…just do it!

Wow, what great advice! I’m going to remember that.
And I loved the way you used dialogue to relay the story, too.
